I thought I knew where I was going but realized I was only moving backwards. Running a race with the clock only to find time is unbeatable yet I'll still get up tomorrow lace up my sneakers and run full force. Because my courage is but foolish pride and my love a mockery, I'll brush the dust of from another day. Smile. For I know I am not beaten.
tbh there’s a good chance that many who were raised in american schools don’t know this, but one of the sanctions on lgbt+ bodies which existed pre-stonewall (and after tbh) was what was called the “three article rule”. it was legally required that people would have to be wearing 3 or more items of “correct” clothing for their gender.
a person found in clothing that did not “fit” their assigned gender could and would be arrested. this law wasn’t repealed in new york until recently. the actual prosecution of this law has disproportionately affected trans women and women of color.
texas is beginning to create “anti-drag” legislations. pre-existing conditions have shown us the degree to which “clothing must fit your assigned gender” can and will be used to create unsafe conditions for lgbt+ and minority populations. labelling drag “inappropriate” for children isn’t just a first step towards systematic abuse - it is the assurance that the systematic abuse will occur. there is no population that will be made safe by this law; it exists only to create moral panic and further division. i’ve spoken about this a lot, but “think of the children” & “protect innocence” is a vile, white-nationalist stakehold which positions queer expression as being inherently “perverted”, “sexual”, or “deviant”.
legislation that corroborates the sentiment that “drag is not appropriate for children” is incredibly harmful not just in the immediate - but because it sets the legal precedent that any act of gnc expression is inherently inappropriate and wrong.
read up on your history, if you can. and remember: we said we would never let this happen to us again.
Libraries are free, mostly. Pretty much everything millennials are “killing” costs money.
Plus, unlike half the stuff we’re killing, libraries actually have a practical use
we out here
Not to be *that* millennial, but as a librarian I’d just like to say that the greatest thing you can do to support your local library is to understand how they are funded and to support their funding with your vote.
Libraries can do a lot all on their own but quite often they cannot legally “toot their own horn” so-to-speak when it comes to advocating for sustaining or increasing funding, getting levies or bond issues passed, etc. Libraries need you to love them not just with your checkouts and attendance at programs.
We can do that too.
build libraries on dead golf courses.
We Are Dewey’s Army X3
Friendly reminder that many Libraries double function as free schools and other free resources, sometimes including otherwise inaccessible technology, like 3D printers.
The libraries in my city host ‘English as a Secondary Language’ classes, cooking classes, classes on how to use that 3D printer, local history classes, responsible naturalistic gardening classes, beekeeping classes, and all sorts of other fun topics. Plus the plethora of clubs that use the library conference rooms as their meeting place.
All for free.
Support and visit your local library. Ask about their services and classes. VOTE TO KEEP THEM FUNDED
While we’re on the topic of libraries, please be sure to support library workers. We’re more than just the people who get you your books, and there is a lot of research coming out about low morale amongst librarians, requires a great deal of emotional labor, and report high rates of mental illness. Also, as is the case with customer facing jobs, we experience a LOT of verbal harassment from patrons, and high rates of sexual harassment. It’s also worth checking out the #protectlibraryworkers tag on Twitter to see how many library workers are being put at very high risk during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Supporting libraries needs to include supporting library workers. Libraries without library workers are warehouses for books.
DUDE.
Now I want to make a sticker or button or both that says “DEWEY’S ARMY” and donate the proceeds to my local library.
Did you know there’s an outtake from the 2000 Grinch movie where Jim Carrey leans in real close to Jeffrey Tambor’s face and then rips off Tambor’s prosthetic nose with his teeth
